homeward trust Edmonton

Homeward Trust is a local non-profit and community-based organization dedicated to preventing and ending homelessness in Edmonton.

Working with all orders of government and the community, they strategically lead and allocate funding to housing and support programs of greatest impact, working towards the goal of everyone having a safe, stable place to call home.

Our housing and support programs take a recovery-oriented approach to ending homelessness by focusing on quickly moving people experiencing homelessness into independent and permanent housing, coupled with follow-up supports tailored to each individual.

This includes a range of housing supporting different needs, varied support programs and prevention and diversion programs to reduce the number of people entering homelessness.

Some examples include the below as no one program can reduce homelessness in the community—it is the relationship between interventions that work toward the goal of preventing and ending homelessness.

• Coordinated Access is a critical component in the work to end homelessness. It is a community-wide system, designed so people who are experiencing homelessness can access the housing support services based on their needs without having to call or visit multiple social service programs.

• FIND – is a social enterprise of Homeward Trust Edmonton that provides essential furnishings free of charge to individuals and families who are transitioning out of homelessness, and supplies low-cost, quality furniture and housewares for sale to the public. All items sold or used in the program are donated by the community and 100% of proceeds help those transitioning out of homelessness. On average, Find furnishes 100 homes through housing supports every month. For more information, visit findedmonton.com

• Supportive Housing: Affordable housing with 24/7 wraparound supports and case management for those with complex needs who would struggle to maintain housing without this support.

- The development of a range of Supportive Housing options is a strategic priority for Homeward Trust, playing a critical role in achieving long-term sustainable solutions, where every individual has access to safe, affordable, secure housing, and the support they need to thrive.

- We’ve seen firsthand how wrap-around supports, case management, healthcare access, and life skills transform lives and reduce reliance on emergency services.

- Supportive Housing is not a shelter or transitional housing rather, residents hold leases, pay rent, and live in a permanent home with the support they need to thrive.

• Bridge Housing: Short-term housing (21–90 days) to help people move quickly into permanent homes.

• Short Term Supportive Housing: 6–18 months of housing for youth and single adults, providing stability and supports to transition into permanent housing.

• Prevention & Diversion Programs to reduce the number of ppl entering homelessness

- Prevention helps households preserve their current housing and diversion services are provided to those with minimal barriers to housing to prevent or shorten their experience of homelessness. This includes creating tailored housing plans to help people resolve their own housing,  - Some specific diversion examples include: Youth Diversion programs such as DiversionFirst and supported referrals as a housing intervention where the main barrier to housing is financial with the goal of providing initial start-up cost (including furniture) to help restore housing stability and independence.

• Other Specialized programs that complement and take place alongside core housing and support programs and case management activities such as intensive clinical supports provided by the Clinical Access Team – Spady CAT, or the Heart and Spirit Program to meet the diverse needs of Indigenous individuals facing houselessness and who continue to be over represented in the houseless population, among others.
