Gallery walls have made a huge appearance in cool new bars and restaurants across the city over the past year or so. They are a great way to display multiple cool art pieces, and the best part is nothing has to match!

The idea with the gallery wall is pick a style and go with it! You can mix and match neat art pieces you have found, family photos or even cool items you've found. No gallery wall is made the same and they add so much style to your space.

Now, how do you make your own? We have compiled some great ideas from designers and DIYers who have tried.

First of all, you have to pick the style you are looking to achieve. Cool, funky frames could be the detail that brings your wall together, or maybe a color scheme that you love will help you pick out the pieces for your gallery wall. Don’t be afraid to mix materials—artwork, photos, unframed, sculptures, there’s room for it all in the mix.

Once you have a good idea of the pieces you are going to display, it's a great idea to lay the pieces out on the floor to get a good idea of what might look good where. You'll want to start with the picture or item you want to be your center piece and build around that. If you are wanting to mix sculptured pieces and art, make sure you are not bunching them together, but spacing out the different items to create more feel to your wall.

It's a good idea to try a few different ways and take photos on your phone. That way you can go through and see which style you like best.

Now that you have asked your friends and family a million times which way they like best and you have made the decision to go for it, try a trial run. What do we mean by that? Cut out pieces of paper the same size as your items and tape them to the wall. By doing this, you will save yourself A LOT of nail holes in the wall.

A good rule of thumb when doing a gallery wall is fives closed fingers apart.

Things to consider:

  • Is it grouped around nearby furniture appropriately?

  • Is it at a comfortable height?

  • Does it fill the space appropriately?

  • Keep in mind the proportion of art to wall size and vice versa.

Now comes the fun part- hanging up all the beautiful pieces you've chosen and seeing your hard work come together!

Below are a few examples of gallery walls we love!

Another really cool idea is to paint all the items the same color. Our friends at Bodega Tapas and Wine Downtown did such a good job of pulling this cool wall together:

Hopefully this will give you some inspiration to help you build your own gallery wall.

Have fun hunting for your pieces and make sure to tag @FindYEG if you found some great items at one of our locations!
