The Core Principle

FIND believes in the core principle of the Housing First program which states that “Every person has a right to as safe and secure home. “ This is the same principle that has established planning at all levels of government in the effort to end homelessness.

Housing First involves moving people experiencing homelessness —particularly people experiencing chronic homelessness—rapidly from the street or emergency shelters into stable and long-term housing, with supports.

FIND works in coordination with social agency partners who are actively housing clients through a Housing First Program in the Edmonton area in order to furnish their home.

Edmonton is a leader in Housing First.

Since 2009, more than 12,000 people have been housed and supported through the Housing First program. More than 80% of people who have participated in Housing First have remained successfully housed.

FIND plays an integral role in providing essential furnishings to individuals and families who are moving out of homelessness through the Housing First program. In 2019, FIND helped furnish 1583 homes through Housing First.

Housing First challenges the idea that a person needs to meet certain preconditions before being housed and, instead, ensures a person is housed first, with access to adequate supports in order to achieve long-term success.
