Housing First is a philosophy and a program.
Homeward Trust Edmonton embraces the principle of Housing First—that every person has the right to a safe, secure home. This principle is at the core of both the Government of Alberta’s and City of Edmonton’s respective plans to end homelessness.
Housing First is a recovery-oriented approach that involves moving people who experience homelessness into independent and permanent housing as quickly as possible, with no preconditions. It then provides them with additional supports and services as needed. It is a proven intervention, moving people from an experience of homelessness to stability with support to access services to achieve long-term success.
Edmonton is a leader in Housing First. Since 2009, more than 6,600 people have been housed and supported through the program. More than 80% of people in Housing First have remained successfully housed and supported a year after being housed.
Find, managed by Homeward Trust, participates in Housing First by providing essential furnishings to individuals and families who are moving out of homelessness through the program.
Consistent with the principle of choice, Housing First clients select their furnishings prior to moving in to housing. The Find team then makes the delivery, transforming a client’s new house in to their new home.
